From Crystal Brook, I headed across to Port Augusta, then North up the Stuart Highway. This took me to a place called Woomera. Woomera has a rich history with the Australian defence department. It was declared a prohibited area in 1947. The Woomera Prohibited Area’s (WPA) size is 122188 km2. The remote location made it an ideal test and evaluation site for Australia and its allies and partners. The WPA was established as a long-range weapons testing and evaluation of weapons systems facility. At present the RAAF are conducting weapons testing during September and at times the Stuart Highway is closed to the public. I was lucky to get through. But it is an interesting place to have a look around. It has a unique feel about it. Sort of like a military town in the middle of the desert. On leaving Woomera, a few more Emu’s decided to cross my path. After that I ended up in Glendambo for the night.
Wow looks awesome!! Hope the road isn’t closed off on our way back!!
I hope not too. I did see the Air Force (RAAF) driving up and the highway, when I went through. It will be the luck of the draw. Might have to extend the holiday if they don’t let us through.
