Opal Capital of The World

It’s now Thursday 5th September and this day will make it 5 days that I have been on the road. After leaving Glendambo, in the morning, the first thing that was apparent was the amount of road kill. It was stretched out over at least 50km, where kangaroos had been hit by vehicles and the ravens and wedge tail eagles were having a feast. I had to manoeuvre around them on several occasions. Once through this carnage I arrived at Coober Pedy. The Opal capital of the world. A lot of residents live under ground at Coober Pedy (meaning “white fella’s hole in the ground”). It was named by indigenous Australians baffled by the early settlers’ preference for subterranean living – something avoided by the superstitious Aboriginal population but embraced by miners, who liked the cooler, sheltered conditions. It is a very multicultural town, with people from all around the world coming to try there luck in finding that vein of opal, that will bring them great wealth. It’s an interesting town with the feel of the wild west. From Coober Pedy it was on to Marla, with a brief photo stop of lake Hart. Lake Hart had no water in it, but had a vast amount of Salt.
